Mancora is a teeny beach town in the north of Peru, famous for it’s rough surf and it’s even more raucous party scene. But to my pleasant surprise it’s actually home to some of Peru’s best food. My five days here were spent exploring the restaurant options from top to bottom, in order to bring you my Mancora restaurant guide. The 6 best places to eat while you’re surfing and sipping your time away in Peru’s ultimate beach town.
1. Papa mo’s milk bar | $
One of the only restaurants on the beach front, Papa Mo’s Milk Bar is serving up so much more than a fantastic location. The American style breakfasts include things like Mexican omelettes with salsa and gucacmole, hashbrowns and fresh fruit salad with granola and yoghurt. Their smoothies are also super filling and deliciously fresh. Go for the coconut and mango. It’s to die for! I ate the economical breakfast menu here pretty much every day I was in town for $12 PEN (about $4 USD). Which included a huge omelette, fruit salad, a coffee and bread and butter. If you’re looking for things to do in Mancora Peru breakfast at Papa Mo’s should be one of them.
2. Banana’s Cafe | $
Banana’s cafe is the perfect spot for a mid-afternoon smoothie following a busy day of sun-baking. The owner is lovely and attentive and the smoothies are delicious. They also offer a small range of fresh sandwiches and burgers. For me the egg, avocado and hummus was the winner. As I’d been without hummus for a good 8 months.
3. cafe del mundo | $
This cute little spot, Cafe Del Mundo, is serving up the best coffee in town. With espressos, lattes and even French Press, if you’ve been in desperate need for a coffee this should be your first stop. Luckily these guys don’t just stop at coffee, their breakfast sandwiches with fillings bacon, egg, chicken, cheese and avocado are the best way to start your morning.
4. la sirena de Juan | $$$
The poshest and most pricey option on the main street of Mancora beach, no Mancora restaurant guide would be complete without La Sirena De Juan. The ultimate treat yo’ self location. The cute, simple yet beachy interior is super inviting and catches your eye from the street. The staff are second-to-none and the food is delicious and presented beautifully. My meal started with some deliciously warm complimentary homemade bread and pickled eggplant. Which I followed with the seared tuna salad served with avocado, greens and a moorish curry dressing. All this set me back around $30 PEN (around $10USD). Which is a smidgen of what you would pay at home.
5. Buda Mancora Cuisine | $$
I stumbled upon Mancora Beach’s Peruvian Japanese fusion restaurant Buda Mancora Cuisine by happy accident. But once I’d tasted their $18 PEN ($5 USD) dinner menu you couldn’t keep me away. It was eating here that I just had to write a Mancora restaurant guide. The ceviche they serve for entree is topped with lime, chilli and a hint of sesame oil. An awesome way to add a Japanese twist to this Peruvian favourite. My main of arroz con mariscos (Seafood rice that’s really similar to paella) was just as good. And on my second visit I sampled some of the sushi which will set you back a little bit more, but is well worth it.
6. beefhouse | $$$
We all hit the point in our trip when we really just need a steak. This craving came for me in Mancora Peru. So I headed straight to the aptly named Beefhouse. Serving up expertly-cooked steaks with huge portions of vegetables and buttery garlic potatoes my craving was well and truely fulfilled. A meal here will set you back $30 PEN + but you’ll walk out the doors stuffed and satisfied.
